Our project through a replacement operation tries to recreate a system where anyone can interact and make the district become a place where to live also from a social point of view. Thus the house typologies are different with solutions that permit the socialization even out from the public premises. A site that is meant for the quality of living thanks to functions interacting with the town layer and among themselves in quite small buildings, that have been thought as separated with covered and open air areas that are able to host different functions. The main points of the project are two: piazza Barriera Garibaldi and the area of the former horticultural market. The areas that previously hosted the customs and the goods warehouses have been converted in public craftsman workshops in order to be used by people both for the production of goods and for training courses for skilled personnel. This to achieve a cooperation between skilled older people and young people living in the area and/or immigrants. The training area has been placed in the upper levels. Here the old customs premises have been put into communication through the construction of two blocks placed in a longitudinal way with respect to the door, as to underline the crossing sensation. In the two new blocks there are study rooms, the library and the meeting rooms. The external walls have a covering that regulates the sun light during the day. In the square there is a series of terraces disposed at different heights that have different functions. The street crossing the square is covered by one of the terraces in order to have a continuous pedestrian way that does not interfere with the existing road-network. The former market area has been designed for living functions. It has been conceived according to three different functions levels and it is constituted by the district market together with commercial areas for small shops, warehouses for the market, warehouses for the residents, the post office, small offices, the chemist’s, the news-stand, a bar. That route crosses the entire area length permitting a covered passage and a continuous use, allowing the continuous use of the area during the day, like a living organism. At a superior level there are the houses for young couples of young families and also for old people. The different typologies are aimed at satisfying different requirements favouring the social mix. At the last level together with houses there are public kitchen gardens for the residents. Here old and young people can interact. Even at the first level a sort of aerial route that corresponds to the covering of the street-market connects the buildings and the different functions. Then the nearest buildings to the square is entirely occupied from district offices and meeting rooms that are available for the residents. The last building have a kindergarten, a media room and a library, at the floor level there is an out-patients’ department and in the centre there is a canteen. The flats have balconies and private external areas. A new road-network has been designed around the former market area, next to the underground parking entrance so that the pedestrian and vehicles routes are completely separated.
